Blog Assignment One

You have just embarked on a brand new journey; the high school experience. Believe me, you will survive, if not excel. Talk to me about your experience so far. What has four days of high school revealed to you about this environment. I would like to hear about your feelings, your expectations, your hopes, your apprehensions. Would do you like about it; what could you do without (besides your English teacher) Please be as frank as possible and, as always, remember our forum.

  1. High School is a very big word, well, it seemed to be. I was really scared the first day and didn't know what to expect. I also thought that everyone would pick on the new coming freshman, but they didn't. So far, high school has been a great experience and I really love it. I have talked to many new people and made new friends, too. I really enjoy having a locker and it isnt bad at all. So far, my teachers are great and I hope that I will have a great school year.

  2. My high school experience so far has been an eye opener. I never knew how spirit driven high school was. Rather than be stuffed in lockers, and pushed in the hallways, I have been embraced as a valuable asset to a very peppy community. It has become apparent that every member of that community should attempt to put in the necessary effort that would benefit the other members. This effort comes in the form on clubs and other extracurriculars. I feel that as a community, we are all preparing for the future.

Anyway, high school has been fun. When I walk on to campus, I feel empowered, knowing that the choices I make here, and from now on in my life, are made by me. I expect to grow from my high school experience not only academically, but also socially. I expect to have learned more about myself and be prepared for the future. I don't think that hopes are always a good thing. Hoping is nearly the same as wishing, and in the long end, wishing for things won't get me further in life. So instead of hoping to be be prepared, or wishing to get good grades, I will DO what I have to do to accomplish these feats.

I don't fear much at school. I am, however, worried about how well I will do in my classes, and if it will be enough to get into a good college. This would have to be my biggest worry, because how well I do here can easily affect my future, and I sure as heck want a great future.

My high school experience has had its ups and downs so far. I like the friendliness of everyone, and the beauty of the school. I do not enjoy however the early hours. Wouldn't you think that they would let us sleep in and be better rested? At least I can wake up knowing that my first class is the always fun english honors with Ms. G. Sorry this was so long. I had a lot more than I thought to say. I guess high school really sets an impression on me.

  3. High school is a little more new for me than for some. I've been going to private school all my life, and naturally some horrifying rumors go around about public school, uppity as we all were. I was pretty scared. I didn't know ANYONE. What if everything the movies showed was true? I have glasses and I act like a real nerd; who could be a better target?

When I came to school the first day, I was scared, but when I came home that day, I was excited. My teachers are very nice, everyone acts very nice. High school isn't something to be feared or to dread; high school is an enjoyable path to walk down to get to the future. I have a feeling that there might be some rocks along the way that I, clumsy as I am, will trip over, but there are many, many people walking down the same path that can pull me up as well as the others that fall down.

All in all, I've voiced the same opinions that the two before me did. Both met similar points, and we have all summed up with what seems to be hope for the future. If we can all hold up our imaginary glasses for a toast, here's to wonderful high school careers and all the equally or more wonderful things to follow!

  4. I was really scared at first to enter High school. Like kaley said, High school seems like such a big word, and I had no idea what to expect. All those movies had people making fun of the freshman, just like keith stated. So I was really surprised, almost disapointed when high school was just as boring and uneventful(except for games) as middle school. But then I started getting a bit confused with my locker and realized that it wasn't going to be quite as much of a sail through as I thought.

  5. High school is pretty overwhelming. Just getting from class to class is pretty difficult. I have to jab my way through the hallways, what with all the people. I guess i was expecting more, though, like Frankie said. But it's still classes, friends, homework, study; just a few levels harder. I mean compared to last year, high school is tough. I have three tests tomorrow and an in class essay:) and it hasn't even been a week. Not meaning to complain or anything, we all do. I think once a routine starts and it becomes more normal it'll feel less stressful. I really am just looking forward to the next four years, like Abigail said!!

  6. Ok. First off, I will not be writing long paragraphs like you people did. No.
High School has been like i thought it would be, just a little though. There were the empty-headed seniors who yelled in a crowded hallway for us to go faster, but hey they can't help it if their minds are filled with fluff! Anyways, classes aren't that hard, but Biology gives A LOT of homework. Ta-da my little blog comment.

  7. @Abigail Excellently written. I know what you mean when you say you were slightly scared because you didn't know anyone. Yet I can't say that I didn't know "anyone"; I did know a limited amount of people, all of which were in different cliques that I probably would do well in; but I understand your worries. I had no idea how I would fit in with the rest of the crowd at school. I'm glad everything worked out.

@Frances I guess someone can never truly be prepared for high school. Somewhere along the line, we are going to have some lie told to us. Apparently, we as freshmen are always deceived somewhere. First, we hear about all of the problems we're going to face. Then we find out it's not like they said it would be. And finally as we're just settling in to a comfortable environment, it gets harder and we don't think that we'll make it through. I know we will. So many generations before us have people made it passed these four years, and they weren't as smart or determined as you, me, or the whole honors class.

  8. To tell you the truth, I really didn't think that high school was going to be much different than middle school. I was pretty sure that the ridiculous stereotypes presented in movies and TV shows about high school life (upper-classmen and jocks constantly picking on younger and seemingly helpless students) were not true. I was also doubtful that I would meet any new friends, or that my classes would be much different from what I had already experienced. The sports that I was planning on playing didn't seem like they would be very different than anything that I had already been involved in. I thought high school was just going to be middle school plus a locker and a slightly different schedule.

Well, I was basically wrong. On the first day of school, I was surprised to meet a few new friends who I could really relate to. I also saw that almost all of my classes are populated with mainly older students, unlike middle school. Every one of my teachers seemed to be interesting people who I would enjoy learning from. Being apart of the cross country team turned out to be much different from most sports that I have played before. It has been fun to practice and race for the team, and I am thouroughly enjoying the experience. I was right though about the falsity of the stereotype about older kids beating up the younger ones.

I am happy about how high school turned out, and am truly excited about my future at ESHS.

  9. Even though the first four days of high school have been a challenge, it hasn't been anything like what I imagined. Walking into high school for the first time, I was expecting to be treated like "the new kid on the block," but I was proved wrong. Instead, I felt welcomed by both the staff and the teachers. It was good to catch up with my friends who I hadn't seen during the summer.

I don't understand how people can manage their time effectively. I could definitely use some tips. Since I'm on the tennis team, I need to practice almost three hours a day, which can be quite overwhelming. By the time I get home and eat dinner, there's hardly any time (never mind energy) to complete my homework. Nonetheless, I'm going to take it one day at a time until I work out the best way to do everything I need to do. On the other hand, it is a privilege to be part of the tennis team, because you have a chance to represent your school.

Good news is that I have mastered opening my locker and have been able to dodge the seniors is the hallways during passing period. (:

Looking forward to a great year ahead of me. Hopefully I can make it through without any major injuries or disappointments.

  10. @Keith
Whoa, that was impressive. Just like you, I'm worried about my grades and how they will affect the colleges I want to attend. I'm sure you'll do fine, so no worries. I don't enjoy waking up early either, so I understand where you're going with that. Either way, though, it's for our own good and we'll just have to do our best.

    @Megan
I definitely agree that getting to class in time is difficult, but I'm sure we'll get used to it eventually. Even though high school is tougher than middle school, it's just getting us ready for what college is going to be like. (:

  11. Well just like Hannah i will not be writing a whole essay. Beacuse I am new to the district I was really scared and i didnt know who i would sit with at snack and lunch. But then comes second period. I met three girls who were really nice and i hung with them....well thats it!!!!!

  13. Before entering highschool i was a mix between very excited and nervous. my older brother, Kevin O'Shea, just gradutaed last year and said it was the time of his life. he told me a lot highschool and how much fun it is. this made me very excited. I was also nervous going into highschool but many people feel that way. I think that i was nervous because it's a brand new experince and you might not know yet where you fit in. So far i really like highschool, it's new and different and I like changes.

I agree with anjali about how it is hard to get to class at times. I still get confused when i try and open my locker. I once was standing at a locker trying to open it and it wouldn't work. I was gettuing really mad because it wasn't working and i was gpoing to be late for class. It ended up not being my locker. Then someone opened thier locker and it hit me in the head. That wasn't the best of days! Getting to class is hard but i am sure that I will get used to it.

Like megan said, we already have a lot of homework. and i know it going to pile up more and more but i guess that's what highschool is all about.

  14. High SChool. How can two insignificant words have such an affect on not only my life, but everyone else's?
Like everyone else, I was pretty terrified the first day. The hallways seemed more like evacuation centers. Seniors kept hitting me with their bags without even bothering to look down at me and apologize (which i was quite thankfull for). On top of that i had practically no idea where any of my classes were , so i just followed people like a lost lamb. To sum things up, the first day was hectic. The only thing that saved it from being a complete disaster was meeting all the enthusiastic teachers.

I've gone a long way since then, though . I've learned to use my small size as an advantage to navigate through the blocked hallways. And I've also remembered where all my classes are, so the stress has decreased.

High School as a whole has been good. I expect adjusting to this new environment will become easier after some time. Im really looking forward to joining clubs and keeping school spirit. Go eagles!

  15. Highschool...
It's quite a change from middle school. I am excited, yet overwhelmed by what has already been thrown at me, and what is to come in the future.
Like Megan said, it's already pretty tough with all of the homework and tests. Getting from class to class without being stepped on by seniors who are twice your size is also a challenge.
However, I am looking forward to a good first year of highschool: friends, teachers, homework, tests, and lot of adjusting to do. I definitely agree with Frankie. On the first day, I had no idea what to expect of this brand new school, but now I think I know just a little bit more of what my next four years are going to be like here. I'm looking forward to a great freshman year ahead!

  17. frances- I remember talking to you during snack about how high school seemed like it was going to be terrifying like in the movies. I'm glad it didn't turn out that way!!

    Kelly- Like you and anjali, it took me 20minutes to finally understand how to use my locker lock ];
i kept freaking out until i finally got it, but practice makes perfect! ....i hope

  19. This summer I was a little nervous about starting highschool, but after the first four days I was not nervous and now I am looking forward to the rest of my time at EL Segundo Highschool. As this being my freshman year I am very pleased with all of my classes, and all of my teachers. Highschool is turning out to be something I am realy enjoying.

  20. four days in, I already can't wait for summer vacation to start again. Other than putting me up to my neck in homework, high school is actually OK. I like the lockers but I wish there were only 2 lockers per row because the hallways get pretty crowded. It's almost impossible to get to class on time, especially when your next class is in another building or upstairs.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Spencer, you are so right highschool is like middle school, I did not expect them both to be so similar.

keith, YA this school is realy spirit driven isnt it.I also agree that highschool is fun, and I hope that both of our highschool experiences are great ones.

    ReplyDelete
  22. spencer, you were wrong about something! You're right, high is going to be a great experience but I wish it would go a little faster. You were also right about making new friends, I've met and aquanted myself with several other people that I wouldn't know unless I was at ESHS. That's more right than wrong so overall, you were right about almost everything. Good luck in high school!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hannah, that was short. Impressive! The seniors are always yelling at us freshmen to go faster but it's not even possible with the crowded hallways. Iliked the "fluff" comment :)

  24. High School has been amazing so far. I love meeting new people, getting used to having a locker, being exposed to all of the new clubs, and being able to participate in school sports. This is going to be a great four years. Can't wait! :)

  25. My high school experience so far has been enjoyable for the most part. The classes themselves have been good, and I can see myself doing well in them. It isn't as different as I expected it to be. I thought that I would be more uncomfortable at the new school, but I just jumped right in and it does not seem too much more challenging than last year (but we're only in four days so far). Like Kaley, I wasn't quite sure what exactly to expect. I've had two sisters go through high school already, but I never knew exactly what it was all about. Luckily, like Kaley again, high school has not been a problem at all and I've actually liked it (especially having a locker). I actually disagree with Megan and Jordan about how difficult it is to get from class to class, but I can see their point because the hallways can get pretty crowded. Despite this, I've enjoyed the new activities and challenges that high school has already presented, like fitting my gym bag in with all of my school stuff in our tiny lockers! The only problem I've actually had was the drama in the volleyball program, but fortunately, that's over with and we can get on with the season. Overall, I think I'm going to enjoy this year.

  26. Haha wow Brooke, I'm glad you like High School as much as I do! :)

  27. Kaley, I totally know what you mean about that first day. I guess I was displaying a very excited, fearless emotion on September 9th, but on the inside I had no idea what High School was going to be like. But like you said, it really will be a great year!

  28. @ Meghan
It is definitely difficult getting from class to class, and I can't believe how much homework we have already gotten. I can definitely sympathize with you.

  29. Wow, i just finished my blog, and my computer just shut off! This sucks. So now i have to start allllll over! Anyway...
High School os just different! Things are much more hard, and you have to really stay on your toes. My days are ALWAYS hectic, between doing softball, cross country, and homework. It's pretty much all i do! Everything is reasonable in high school except for one thing! Leisure time! Free time is so important to me, and high school hasn't had a drop of it! If the day had a few more hours in it, life would be much better. I am really excited that our school is so envolved! In middle school we had no school sports or clubs or anything actually fun, but now everything is different. We get to do sports, clubs, dress up, dances, pep rallys, and all that fun stuff. High school is going to be an interesting journey but it's something we will never forget. All i can aim for is make these four years be a very memorable time of my life.

    -Analise:)

Oh yes i totally agree with Chris! Summer needs to get here! I miss the beach so much!

And to Anjali and Keith I'm more like freaking out about college. I really want to do the absolute best i can this year!

  30. Four days of highschool are great so far. I'm thankful to have a lot of friends in each grade who can socialize and play with me. My feelings at first about high school were a bit intimidating, but now as I step into the environment it is very friendly. My expectations for High School are that every teacher is nice, and that hopefully some of the lunch prices would go down. I hope to recieve grades beyond a 4.00, be able to start on the Freshman-Sophmore Basketball team, and try to be in as many clubs as I can. My apprehensions are being late or absent to class, not being able to get great grades, and not being able to try.
What I like about Highschool is the learning, the playing, the clubs, and unlocking my locker between periods. What I can deal without is the crowded hallways. One hallway is crowded up to the point where you need an air-traffic news station to tell you what's the best route to take to class.

  31. My high school experience so far has been really fun. I enjoy playing for the high school football team and I like all of my teachers so far. The high school is really big and you see a bunch of people in the hallways. I like everything about the high school except for the crowded hallways and how people push you around while your trying to get to your locker. During the summer i didn't want to go back to school at all, but now I'm glad to be back in school.

  34. My experience in high school so far has been great, besides the waking up part. I will always remember when I first stepped into the high school and opened my locker. What a great feeling it was. I thought it would take me time to get use to this new environment but I felt more comfortable than ever. My time to work hard and get good grades has finally come. I know that within these four years if i want to become successful in life, now is not the time to mess around. My expectations for this high school is to get good grades, have wonderful teachers, start on the frosh/soph basketball team, and be in many clubs to get involved.

  38. This first highschool days have been better than I thought they would be. Before highschool i have to admit i was a little scared 'bout the idea but everything came together the first day of school. Now I feel really secure around campus, and feel like the highschool experience is a good one. One problems I am having in highschool though are the lockers. I'm tired of these lockers, I never can open them in the first try and i get so mad that I punch the locker and everybody 'round me thinks I got anger management. I'm starting to get the hang of it. Also my campus orientation is horrible. I always have to meditate for a few seconds to remember where my classes are at. Not to mension, I have gotten my P.E. locker cut because of some stupidity I did and now Romo has a kind of grudge on me. However, I think that highschool will pay off with a few scholarships either from grades or hopefully from soccer.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kevin, I know what you're saying. I've encountered this problem various times and I have reached the conclusion that walking around all the people, so like walking in the right/left side of the hall will get you to class a lot faster.

  40. Wajeeh, I can relate to your highschool goals. I too say to myself that i have to do the best I can in these 4 years of highschool. I hope that you fulfill all your academic dreams.

  42. Learning the new routine and different buildings has been very difficult. Whether its trying to find the Spanish building or getting hit by others while your trying to get into your bottom locker. High School is so much harder than middle school, yet i know that it will be a great learning experience. Seeing all my friends again that I haven't seen all summer was great. In a way I wish that everything will come naturally, but i know i have to work for what i want to succeed.

Other than that i know that high school will be super fun(:
